Biddeford, ME - - Sterling Rope Company announced that Chris Sharma has officially joined the Sterling Rope Team as one of their Elite Athletes. Sterling and Sharma began to discuss this relationship during the past summer and met during the Outdoor Retailer Show. After Sharma tested the product, he signed on.

“I never knew rope could make such a difference on a climb,” said Sharma after using the Nano 9.2mm to send the epic project Jumbo Love on Clark Mountain in San Bernadino County, California. This climb is over 250 feet long, with much of it overhanging almost 45 degrees. Jumbo Love, rated 5.15b, is possibly the most difficult route in the world. Chris worked the route using a Sterling Evolution Velocity 9.8mm and then sent it on September 11, 2008 with an 80M Fusion Nano.

  Sharma will play an important role in Sterling’s product development and product testing. This matches well with Sharma’s incredible stamina and amazing fortitude while climbing the world’s most difficult routes, and also to his focus on aesthetics, personal growth, and outreach in the climbing community.

Your climbing rope, your lifeline, the single most important piece of your equipment. Over the last few decades, climbing styles, trends, and levels have evolved and increased dramatically. Years ago, 5.10 was the upper end, today climbers are pushing 5.15. Up until the mid-eighties, if someone wanted to climb, they had no choice but to go outdoors. Today, novices as well as experts in most areas of the country and the world have multiple options, the local crag, nei**orhood gym, or your friend's home woody.

The same evolution has occurred in the manufacturing of climbing ropes. In the past, climbers had limited choices – a 11mm single, a 9mm half and 8mm twins. Today, things have changed. Technical advances in yarn fiber constructions, state of the art machinery, and demands by climbers for lighter, innovative, performance driven products have led to life-safety rope and cord products being designed to meet every situation and everyone's specific technical needs. Dynamic climbing ropes lead a very hard and sometimes short life. Sterling Rope's climbing ropes are made by climbers for climbers. We sacrifice no aspect in the manufacturing process. We compromise nothing. We choose the best yarns. We put the right percentage of twist in the sheath and core yarns to produce extremely durable, superb handling ropes. We meticulously hand and visually inspect all our ropes to insure they meet our stringent quality control standards. We put our ropes to the test everyday - we test and break ropes on our in-house quality control facility. On a regular basis, we subject our ropes to a wide range of climbing - redpointing, dogging, hauling, even to the point of trashing them. Furthermore, some of the most widely recognized and respected climbers in the world participate in our Product Development Test Team Program and test all our products under the most extreme and diverse conditions. In all these cases, we monitor how our ropes handle constant abuse to insure that the products that we make meet the needs of today's climbers.
