Skiing Mt. Balang

By Jon Otto

We assume this is the first time someone has skied from the flanks of Mt. Balang, but even if it’s not, we had a fantastic day and recommend this as an off-piste destination, due to its close proximity to Chengdu and easy access from the road. Mt. Balang is the pass one used to drive over on the way from Chengdu to Siguniang Park. The road tops out at 4480 meter elevation, but hardly anyone drives up to the pass anymore since an eight kilometer tunnel through the mountain was completely in 2016.

Our ski story starts on Thursday, 26 March while driving back from Siguniang Park. I noticed that there was a lot of snow on the pass, so Ken and I half seriously talked about going back two days later to ski. But then Ken suddenly decided to go climb Mt. Banji instead (can’t blame him, but his loss). When I checked the weather report Saturday morning it showed heavy snowfall all day and evening on Mt. Balang. Fresh powder! I needed to go! I needed to find a partner. I could have gone alone, but what if I got hurt or if there was an avalanche? I called Little Liu (Liu, Junfu) and said, “Let’s go ski Mt. Balang”. He said,“OK”, jumped on the subway, and we were driving to Siguniang Park that afternoon.

We spent the night at Siguniang Park in order to acclimatize a bit. The next morning we drove up to Mt. Balang pass, which required some 4-wheeling through snow. We parked at the top of the pass, put on our avalanche transceivers, packed our avalanche gear, water, food and medical kit, got our skis out and started up toward the slopes. Little Liu had an AT set-up while I only had regular heavy ski resort skis which I carried. I can tell you that I never again will trudge through knee deep snow carrying heavy skis. Little Liu was twice as fast as me and having fun floating over the 30+ cm of fresh powder. But between my sobs of exhaustion I was actually enjoying the morning. It was -7 degrees Celsius, partly sunny and clearing. We were making Tracks through virgin snow towards a perfect slope, surrounded by mountains of snow and rock as far as the eye could see. It felt like you could touch the top of 6250 meter high Mt. Siguniang, not so far in the distance. It was just the two of us, a whole mountain side, and fresh powder all to us. What more could a skier dream for.

We skied all day long, resting ocCASIOnally to CATch our breath and admiring how lucky we were to be in the mountains on such a perfect day with nobody else around. And all because of a spontaneous decision the day before. Late afternoon we made one final run down the slopes, skiing to the door of the Jeep. We were back in Chengdu in time for dinner. I’m definitely making Mt. Balang a future ski touring destination.

What you need to ski Mt. Balang:
2+ days (preFERAble at least 3 days. 1 to acclimatize, and 2 to ski)
A jeep with 4-wheel drive is most dependable
Alpine touring ski or snowboard set-up
Avalanche rescue education and equipment
A rad attitude!
